✦ Lambing Season
At The Velvet Ewe, our lambing is slow, deliberate, and full of anticipation.
We breed in the Fall, allowing our ewes plenty of time to graze, rest, and grow strong before lambing begins. This schedule not only mirrors nature but also ensures our lambs arrive during the gentler months of late winter and early spring. We plan our breeding pairings to thoughtfully pair the ewes with the selected ram.
Our Lambing Calendar:
- Breeding Season: End of August – December
- Lambing Typically Begins: Late February
- Lambing Typically Ends: May
Each lambing season is small and intentional. We plan our pairings carefully to uphold the Babydoll’s charming conformation and sweet temperament.
When are lambs available to reserve?
We typically begin sharing available lambs within their first two weeks of age under Available Babydoll Sheep. This allows us to evaluate their personalities and potential before opening reservations.
When can lambs leave your farm?
Lambs are weaned and ready to leave our farm between 8–12 weeks of age.
Do you dock their tails?
Yes! We band the tails of our lambs during their first week of age. This is a simple process and the lambs barely know it’s there. Their tails become naturally docked within a few short weeks.
Will you wether the rams if I just want a pet?
Yes. We require full payment prior to castrating our ram lambs. We like to schedule this procedure when they are between 5-8 weeks of age with our vet. This is handled at a small charge of $100 to cover the services with our veterinary clinic and must be included at the time of your full purchase. Please include in your purchase details the lamb you are buying and that this includes Wethering Services.
Can I ask what is the purpose of having a wether since they can’t reproduce?
Of course. Wethered lambs/sheep make a great family pet or flock buddy. Should you need to ever quarantine anyone in your flock, separate your breeding ram away from the ewes for a breeding season, etc. your wether makes an excellent buddy to keep them company all year long!
