✦ Lamb Registrations
We take great joy in offering Babydoll Southdown Sheep that reflect the best of this heritage breed.
With a gentle temperament, correct conformation, and lasting value.
The majority of our lambs at The Velvet Ewe are registered with:
Registrations Include:
- Official pedigree and registration certificate by the association
- USDA Scrapies ear tag corresponding to the lamb’s registry records
- Lamb name, date of birth, and dam/sire info
- Transfer of registrations to buyer’s name (we handle this for you)
- Genotype testing + a copy of the test results
Registration Process and Timeline:
Once your lamb has been purchased in full, we will complete the transfer paperwork with their associated registries and your certificates will be mailed directly to you from the registration. We know how fun and exciting it is to name your new lamb – we will work with you so that your lamb’s paperwork reflects your chosen name for him/her.
Future Breeders:
If you’re planning to build your own flock, we’re happy to help you choose the perfect fit with our unrelated ram/ewe pairings.
A few helpful notes when preparing:
– You will want to wait to breed your ewe lambs at their 2nd fall, not in their first year.
– However, rams can begin breeding as early as 6 months of age. Should you select a ram lamb at the same time with your ewe lambs, we recommend separating your ram during the breeding months so that your ewes are not bred too early.
– Keeping a wether (castrated ram) in with your future breeding ram provides a buddy during the off-season. Likewise, if you only have 1 ewe lamb that is too young to breed, a wether is recommended to keep with her as well. They are herd animals and do best with the same breed to buddy up with.
Wethers and Registrations:
We only provide registration paperwork on intact rams and ewes. Wethers will not be registered as they are strictly pets, but we will provide a birth certificate with their birthday and parents.
Wondering why have a wether?
They are excellent family pets and make the perfect companion to your ewes or breeding ram during off-season, or when holding back a ewe or ram for a later breeding year. They also make a great friend when you welcome new sheep to your farm as they can provide company during quarantine. We typically do not wether our ram lambs unless at the request of the buyer. We will schedule this with our veterinarian for a quick surgical procedure as we do not use castration banding to avoid the risk of anything being left behind. There is little to no downtime after the procedure. Wethers must be purchased in full prior to the castration appointment as this procedure cannot be reversed. All wethers will have a USDA Scrapies ear tag in their ear.
